Why Women's Retreats?

Here is a message from Retreat Guide and Co-Founder of iamHeart, Susanna Bair, from her Blog Post about her recent Women's Retreat in Reading, Pennsylvania:

I was active in the women’s movement in the 70s and remember vividly the feeling of early women’s circles, gatherings, retreats, women’s cafe, and  especially women’s theatre groups. Reflecting on all these experiences of the past still brings up certain visceral emotions within me. Women’s movement, women’s circles contributed much to the discovery of my Self, which I so much cherish and value.

There  are lots of ways to discover and to explore the Self. The “Spiritual Path” provides an avenue to discover the part of self that is most hidden and precious at the same time.

So why, then, Women’s Retreats?

When women are left to themselves a different voice emerges within. A voice often unheard, squelched, or shushed and disqualified.

I am sure there was a lot of material that came up in each of the women’s individual hearts that will never be shared in the group process at all. And that is totally fine. We are not looking for a purging, but when it happens we want to be present to each other, and share as much as feels appropriate. That is what connects us, that is what brings the whole group to a different vibrational level.

This retreat felt like a strong deja vu experience: A group of women independently decided to participate in a women’s retreat without really knowing what to expect and trusting that it would turn out to be what they needed. That is fearless behavior: to step forward into the unknown. They all knew me, the leader of the retreat, they knew we would be meditating, doing yoga and dances. But that was the outer container.

The question was: How would we touch that inner space and make it transparent, communicable? How to trust, share and feel safe and held after we have made our hearts vulnerable?

At the peak of the retreat, it became a feast of different voices speaking for each other! The deja vu became an “iamU.” Experiences that seemed familiar from the past were reexperienced in the present through “Oh my gosh,    she is just like me.”

Who Should Attend?

"Your vulnerability will connect you to the rest of our suffering world.  Your creativity will set you free.  There is nothing wrong with YOU."  --Andrea Balt

Who Should Attend?

Women who feel a mysterious inner knowing, who want to connect with intuition

Women looking for a sacred space to heal, reconnect, and discover Self

Community-oriented, hopeful, strong, path-seeking Women of Heart

Led by Susanna Bair in collaboration with other iamHeart teachers, the group meditation retreat provides a setting where you have all the support you need to really deepen your experience of Heart Rhythm Meditation. For those who are new to meditation, the group retreat is a way to gain experience that will be key for progress along the spiritual path. The group retreat will lead to a real and lasting opening of your heart.

The group retreat experience includes guided meditations, partner and group exercises, lecture and discussion, walking meditation and movement, and special activities which include music, whirling, and walking on fire. Time is set aside to create friendships, discuss the teachings, and share experiences.

The group retreat vaults you ahead by creating new breakthroughs in your life, opening new levels of spiritual realization, and deepening the experience of your existing meditation practice.

What Will We Do?

Each day will include a balance of meditation, sharing and discussion, yoga, and ancient songs and dances.  We will do a practice called "The Heart That Knows and The Heart That Speaks," which is about deep listening and sharing.  Breakfast, lunch, and dinner will be a community experience and there will be break time in the afternoons.  Evening programming will include music, sacred ceremonies, and meditation partner practices.   Heart Rhythm Meditation is a way of breathing consciously in rhythm with your heartbeat.  Counting six heartbeats on the inhale and six on the exhale (or 8 and 8, or 10 and 10…) brings harmony to your whole system. It’s a practice that increases your ability to respond to life with energy, clarity, wisdom, and resilience.

Susanna Bair

Susanna Headshot.jpgThis group retreat will be led by Susanna Bair, co-founder of iamHeart and the University of the Heart, and co-author of the source book on heart-based meditation, Energize Your Heart.  She leads Heart Rhythm Meditations with grace and depth.  People often report that her guided meditations are the highlights of their retreat experiences overall.

Susanna has worked with her husband Puran as well as with leading researchers to measure the effects of meditation on heart rhythm, brain waves, light emission, and electromagnetism, demonstrating mastery of both transcendent and heart-centered meditation techniques.

She has been honored to receive the Alyce and Elmer Green Award for Innovation from the International Society for Subtle Energy and Energy Medicine (ISSSEEM), whose past recipients include Dr. Delores Krieger, Dr. Norman Shealy, and Joseph Chilton Pierce.

Denise Runyon

Walia 3.JPGDenise Runyon has been a mentor and web course teacher with iamHeart for seven years.  She is the Dean of Hurqalya Healing and teaches Heart Rhythm Meditation locally in Yellow Springs, Ohio.   She is a certified leader of the Dances of Universal Peace.  Her professional background is in social work and community change.  She said she was raised to be an independent woman by a mother who transcended trauma and poverty.  She has been in women's groups for most of her adult life which carried her through a divorce, single parenthood, and now marriage!  Feminine Spirituality is close to her heart-- she has studied the Divine Feminine and hopes to make Her visible.  She said,

"We have a lot of power that's been made invisible, and when we recognize the power we have we can step forward into the world in that way.  I'm about recognizing the power we have, I'm not in a fight with what we don't have.  For example, to make 'space-holding' a visible and valued contribution-- a lot of what women do we can't see, they don't get recognized or paid for it, so it's not valued.  I want to see it valued.  Women's Spirituality has to do with singing and dancing and being embodied. The work of the Heart is often the work of women."
