IAM: Institute for Applied Meditation

Becoming an IAM Teacher

Instructor Training #3, "Map Instructor"

The material in this course concerns the nine stages of adult development. IAM's commitment is to lead a student through these nine steps, although no one can predict how long the complete process will take. Progress may be rapid at the beginning and then slow dramatically, or the path may be difficult early on and get easier. Generally there is one step where one's paradigm is severly challenged that requires several years.

The Map of the steps on the path to fulfillment is a great asset to our school. It guides the teacher, as the teaching process has to change at each step the student takes, and it allows the student to measure his/her progress.

  • The Five Stages of Mystical Experience, from the very beginning to the ultimate human experience.
  • The Nine Steps of Adult Development
  • The Nine Steps of Relationships
  • The Nine Steps of Professional Leadership
  • The Further Nine Steps of Service to God and Humanity
  • How to help yourself and others to advance to the next step

Instructor Training #5, "IAM Certified Teacher"

The relationship of teacher and student. Advanced teaching techniques.

While mind-based meditation is easier to teach (one school says learning their meditation is about as hard as learning how to brush your teeth), heart-based meditation is more difficult, comparable to learning how to swim. A teacher of Heart Rhythm Practice is going to show others how to do something they don't think they can do: actually feel their heart beating, and use that rhythm to regulate their breath.

Consequently, the requirements for teacher certification are comparable to becoming a lifesaver swimmer. To become a teacher, you will need to demonstrate expertise in

  • Stages 1 through 3 of Heart Rhythm Practice,
  • The physiological signals of each stage,
  • Leading a group in meditation and discussion, and
  • Explaining the theory of how HRP works, physically, emotionally and spiritually.

This training will be offered in 2009.

    Prerequisite: IT#4.
